BS 9792 Fire Risk Assessment – Housing – Code of Practice was issued 28 January 2024
BS 9792 Fire Risk Assessment – Housing – Code of Practice, was developed by a drafting panel under FSH/14 Fire Precautions in Buildings. The text of PAS 79-2 was used as a starting point but has been completely reviewed and revised in many areas.
The main changes to the text include:
The DPC for BS 9792 runs from 25th January to 25th March.
The IFE has announced its commitment to driving further vocational routes into the fire sector, recognising how the modern apprenticeship path is crucial in shaping the future of training within fire and other industries across the built environment. As the UK come together to celebrate the apprenticeship pathway, these results uncover the importance of developing apprenticeship programs that comprehensively showcase the breadth of careers available within the fire sector.
In a stride toward further pathways into the fire sector, candidates that successfully complete their end-point assessment for the Operational Firefighter course at the Fire Service College in Moreton-In-Marsh, can apply to achieve Technician grade membership at the IFE. This recognises the two years of rigorous practical and theory studies that map to the competencies required.
Commenting on the need for further avenues in fire, IFE CEO, Steve Hamm added: “The modern apprenticeship pathway not only ensures a more dynamic and inclusive workforce, but actively encourages individuals from different backgrounds and experiences to contribute to the fire sector.
“As a professional body, it’s paramount that we advocate for diversity and support candidates in their professional development. Our vision of a fire sector enriched by a wide range of experiences and socio-economic backgrounds continues to drive our activity."
To further support those starting out in a career in fire, the IFE last year announced it had made its Student membership offering free.
Both IFE exam candidates and those individuals in fire-related studies are now entitled to Student membership, providing access to learning and knowledge resources and an international network of contacts to support their career.
Further information about Student membership is available on the IFE website https://www.ife.org.uk/Membership.
Building Inspectors for High Rise Buildings
The inaugural in person meeting of the Industry Competence Committee (ICC) was held in London on 13 September 2023.
During the inaugural meeting there was a positive discussion on how this will help drive industry to improve competence across the built environment and increase standards in the skills, knowledge, experience and behaviours of those working across the built environment.
ICC members act as independent experts not organisational representatives and are drawn from diverse backgrounds across the built environment working together to provide BSR with reliable and insightful advice and intelligence. Dennis Davis the Fire Sector Federation’s Director of Competence is an ICC member.
ICC will be building on work already carried out by the interim committee in helping BSR and wider industry understand the competence landscape and, using current evidence, will prioritise a workplan for the coming year.
The Building Safety Act reaches key milestones in October and improved competency is crucial to improving the standards achieved by organisations and individuals in the built environment.
From October 2023, developers of high-rise buildings will no longer be able to choose whether they want to use local authority building control or a privately approved inspector as their building control body. The Building Safety Regulator will automatically be the building control authority for all high-rise buildings.
Competence assessment is part of the pathway for building control professionals to become registered building inspectors. The register will open in October 2023, with registration mandatory from April 2024, when Building Control will officially become a regulated profession.
From that date (April 2024), individual building control professionals, working for both the private sector and local authorities, will need to have passed an independent competence assessment to operate, and they will be required to be registered on the Building Safety Regulator’s register of building inspectors.
We provide fully comprehensive fire risk assessments (FRAs) and other fire safety services that can keep your business and property safe.
